Sun Desktop Shipments Top 100,000 During Second Quarter

Strong Workstation Sales and Record-Breaking Demand for Sun Ray(TM) Appliances Give Sun Commanding Position in Desktop Marketplace

"And when considering the total market, which combines Unix and NT
(branded) workstations, Sun led all other vendors in total revenues generated with an estimated $468
million in sales, and was second in total workstation shipments."

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news),
announced today that more than 100,000 desktop systems were shipped during Q2CY'00 because of
consistently strong sales of its entire line of Sun Ultra(TM) workstations combined with record-
breaking demand for its Sun Ray(TM) appliances. According to estimates released in August by
IDC(1), Sun was #1 in both units shipped and revenue in the Unix-based workstation market.

IDC's report also showed that Sun commanded a 60 percent share of all workstations shipped in the
Unix® market for Q2CY'00.

And when considering the total market, which combines Unix and NT
(branded) workstations, Sun led all other vendors in total revenues generated with an estimated $468
million in sales, and was second in total workstation shipments.

Sun's strong Q2 results mirrored its 1999 leadership of the technical desktop. According to IDC's
tracking report for 1999(2), Sun held 57 percent of the market for Unix workstations that year,
reflecting an 11 percent growth over its 1998 shipments. Sun achieved this through sales in excess of
349,000 units -- more than all other vendors combined for the same time period -- with revenues of
more than $2.5 billion.

``As the original workstations company, Sun continues to offer the real thing in Unix desktop
systems,'' says Shahin Khan, Vice President of Product Marketing in Sun's System Products Group.
``While Sun's workstations and power-graphics systems on our Solaris(TM) Operating Environment
are the ultimate computing machines for technical users and dot com developers, the
zero-administration, zero-noise Sun Ray appliances are the low-cost trailblazers in the education,
technical, hospitality and retail markets with its innovative hot-desking flexibility.''

Sun's complete desktop strategy has also led to the success of its Sun Ray information appliances,
which are stateless, easy-to-use, client devices that enable users to instantly access the Internet via a
service provider. Sun Ray appliance's Hot Desk Technology delivers session mobility that allows
users to access their sessions from any appliance on the network. The appliances never need to be
upgraded because everything -- including the operating system, applications and control of the
graphical user interface -- reside on the server.

As a result, businesses and schools alike are realizing significant savings through reduced
maintenance and administration costs. This affordability, reliability and ease of use have made Sun
Ray appliances instantly popular following the technology's introduction last year.

Sun Ray appliances have been widely accepted by tens of thousands of early adopters of this
cutting-edge technology worldwide. During Q2CY'00, record-breaking sales were attributed to
interest coming from a broad range of market segments, including technical, finance, customer
relationship management, education and government.
