The wishes of the people always count, which is why there is a complicated mechanism of government, the so- called checks and balances. But one has to stand for something, so that people know what they are electing. Bush does. I think the things he represents would be good for the country. Nor do I think he is aiming at being the "spiritual head", just a leader. Religion is not, nor will it become, an issue here in the same way that it is in India or Egypt. People like you look at the Religious Right and automatically assume that it is reactionary in the way that it is in your country. Mostly, it is not. No one is trying to set up a theocracy. There are a handful of issues that, if the Religious Right got its way, would lead to the consensus that prevailed around 1970, when abortion was a matter for the states and moments of silence were not under attack in the courts. No one accused the United States of being a theocracy in 1970.........

--The country should be in the business of eclecting a Persident, not the spiritual head.'--

... politics and religion really are the same thing after all you know.

But an individual's ideology should not take precedence over collective idealogy of the nation.

Correct. And this is a Conservative country. I know you would never guess that from sampling the elite journals and academia. It's true none the less.
