Max,
Like VZ and Northpoint, I see this as a big plus for WSTL. They knew all along that going after the ILECs would eventually bring them to the CLECs. Through SBC they get into COVD and through VZ they get into NOPT. It also shows the acceleration in DSL deployment that COVD and SBC would join. Since COVD focused on business customers, that would be good clients for WSTL products. Small business is one place WSTL wants to be.

Market action for WSTL is inverse. The more good news that comes out on DSL and the potential for WSTL, the lower the stock goes. I can only assume that the dynamics are to drive it down to accumulate it. Bizarro mundo.

It really is just TOO HOT TO TOUCH.

I'm buying. I think that those who sell are really STUPID, but right now I'm glad to look like a fool. The lower it goes, the more I'll buy.

All the best,
Michael

Max: This SBC announcement makes it clear they're stomping the pedal to the metal with their DSL plans. Clearly they want their market covered, and covered in as fast a fashion as possible. A parenthetical aside here....I wouldn't be at all surprise should SBC buy COVC somewhere down lifes way. Given the LEC's like to dominate their monopol.....uhh....business coverage areas (heh), I don't see them having a "partner" for long in this sector. COVD now becomes an interesting play from that perspective.

Anyway.....we all know WSTL is going all out for SBC, so as such I don't see this news as impacting WSTL negatively. WSTL's still going gang busters, and there's nothing to indicate this is about to change, therefore over the interim period WSTL should (after this death by a thousand cuts period expires) do very well. Be that as it may, there is one thing WSTL needs to guard against, and that is market perception that COVD will now begin to eat into future earnings by taking lines originally projected by the market to be covered by WSTL, and now being covered by COVD (who I believe uses Alcatel.....but I'm going to have to snuffle around and see if this is truly the case). The market might get "anxious" over this perception.

Bottom line? I happen to think there's enough business for everyone over the next couple of years. Besides, who's to say SBC hasn't made some "recommendations" in this very area when they were discussing these plans with COVD. Recommendations which could be favorable to WSTL. IMHO, and mere speculation, of course.

>>any thoughts on how/if this impacts wstl?

I don't like to think THAT much! <g>

All i know is the setup appears as good as January and the DMI confirmed today. Volume blast helped the OBV recover alot, let's see if we can follow through. I suspect the NAZ holds the key in the coming days.

As for the commentary, it is obvious WSTL has not been involved with CLECs, and neither were the ILECs. Now they are and so too for WSTL. It is clear the CLECs don't have the money to go it alone.
I know as far as Chicago area is concerned, you are better off with COVAD than Ameritech. You can get the service with them at least.
But I think the book is still out whether these partnerships lead to one vendor or another as preferred provider. Hopefully todays action is vote for WSTL and not CMTN or EFNT.
