BEARS CAN'T STOP GIANTS RUNNING GAME

September 17, 2000

CHICAGO - "Thunder and Lightning" struck again for the undefeated New York Giants.

Tiki Barber and rookie Ron Dayne, who have dubbed themselves the "Thunder and Lightning" backfield, rushed for a combined 153 yards as the Giants held off the Chicago Bears, 14-7, to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 1993.

Barber, who is "Lightning" because of his speed, gained 88 yards on 17 carries and snapped a 7-7 tie with a three-yard TD run with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter. Dayne contributed 65 yards on 18 carries.

The Giants failed to put away the game as Mike Wells blocked Brad Daluiso's 31-yard field goal with 1:08 remaining. But the Bears were unable to gain a first down and Kerry Collins took one snap to run out the clock.

Chicago dropped to 0-3, matching its start off 1998 when it lost its first seven games in Dave Wannstedt's final season as coach. The Bears had won 13 of their previous 16 home openers.

The Giants drove 80 yards in eight plays on the game's opening possession to take a 7-0 lead on Collins' 34-yard TD pass to rookie Ron Dixon.

The Bears answered late in the first half as Cade McNown tossed a two-yard TD pass to Eddie Kennison with 14 seconds remaining, capping a 12-play, 74-yard march.
