Advanced Fibre Communications Selects Centillium Communications' Chipsets For Full-Rate, ADSL-Ready Multi-Service Access Equipment
Centillium Chipsets Provide AFC With Technology Required to Meet Broadband Access Needs of End-Users Located beyond 18,000 Feet From the Central Office
PETALUMA, Calif., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Fibre Communications®, Inc. (AFC) (Nasdaq: AFCI - news), a leader in multi-service broadband solutions for the telecommunications industry, today announced it has selected Centillium Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: CTLM - news) as one of the Company's chipset vendors. AFC will implement Centillium's CopperFlite(TM) central office chipsets, which support full-rate and G.lite asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) technologies, in its ADSL x+y(TM) plug-in cards for its AccessMax(TM) family of platforms -- the UMC1000®, DMAX1120(TM), EMAX(TM) and EMAXplus(TM). The ADSL x+y(TM) plug-in cards provide G.dmt and G.lite ADSL services as well as lifeline POTS from a single card through the use of highly integrated splitter technology. Headquartered in Fremont, Calif., Centillium has been an industry leader in G.lite ADSL chipsets and, in January of this year, expanded its product family with a multi-mode (G.DMT full rate + G.lite) ADSL chipset.

``Centillium chipsets provide an optimized density and cost-to-performance ratio, allowing us to engineer remote access equipment for carriers that cost-effectively delivers narrowband, wideband, and broadband services,'' said Mehmet Balos, senior vice president of global marketing and North American sales for AFC. ``AFC's ADSL x+y(TM) line card, with a Centillium chipset, provides up to six POTS plus six ADSL circuits, which triples our broadband capacity relative to previous versions.''

Centillium delivers a high degree of technical innovation while maintaining a commitment to meeting its customers' requirements. The company's key strengths include highest port density, lowest power consumption, and highest level of integration in the industry. By using Centillium chipsets in its broadband equipment, AFC can provide cost-effective, high-performance equipment to its customers who are committed to offering broadband services to the millions of customers served through digital loop carriers (DLCs) and remote cabinets.

``Broadband delivery from DLCs and multi-service access platforms is critical for overcoming the digital divide,'' commented Balos. ``DLCs and multi-service broadband platforms represent the fastest growing segment of new line growth.''

AFC is focused on delivering cost-effective and flexible telephony services from remote cabinets. Unlike competitive remote access solutions that involve overlay technologies, AFC provides integrated solutions that allow carriers to cost-effectively deliver broadband without a loss in legacy telephony services. A February report from RHK stated that total access lines served from remotely distributed systems will increase from 35% in 1999 to 53% in 2003. AFC is the industry's leading provider of broadband equipment for DLCs and multi-service platforms. In fact, carriers using AFC's equipment today serve nearly 800 customers worldwide.
