I do wonder, though, if the FAQ might be easier to maintain and potentially richer, if the bulk of it were moved, like the lists, to a web site and that what showed up each interval was a link, a table of contents, and references about what had changed.

We've thought about this very point a number of times. There are good points to be made in having the FAQ strictly off-site. However, the point that carried the day, so far, is that the FAQ is not for thread veterans (who are assumed to simply skip over it). The FAQ is for lurkers and newbies. And these people seem to bypass links. By posting the FAQ on the thread each week we hope to have newbies stumble into it enough times to actually read it.
