EU's Prodi, Solbes Say Central Bank Intervention Could Aid Euro
By James G. Neuger

Brussels, Sept. 12 (Bloomberg) -- European Commission officials made a
plea for the world's leading central banks to band together to support the
euro, saying the U.S. would benefit from a weakening of the dollar.

Coordinated euro purchases by the European, U.S. and Japanese central
banks ``would be in America's interest,'' Romano Prodi, the commission's
president, told Germany's Stern magazine. He acknowledged, however,
that such joint efforts are ``always difficult, especially just before U.S.
elections.''

Separately, Monetary Commissioner Pedro Solbes said the European
Central Bank cannot rely on interest-rate increases alone to attract
investment to Europe. ``Intervention could be decisive here but it can't be
the sole factor,'' he told a European Parliament committee.

The commissioners' comments came as the euro fell to a record low for
the second straight day, dropping to 85.56 U.S. cents. These officials
have no direct influence over the 11-nation ECB, whose president Wim
Duisenberg addresses the parliament at 3 p.m. Brussels time.
