MB, In no way do I think shorts should not share their opinions on discussion boards. I think you missed my point, and perhaps I wasn't clear. Posting a position and backing it up with 'facts and logic' and a willingness to discuss the pros and cons of the position is one thing, ridiculing anyone who dares to hold a contrary position is another. The tactics described in that article are used by some short sellers to demoralize longs. Whether it works in the long run is academic; in the short run I know it works, and so do they. Take a look at the SI board of any stock that A@P, Pluvia, Mr Pink, etc., take aim at: the article does a good job of describing their tactics.

That's not to say that the stocks they target aren't overpriced, or that their management isn't crummy, etc. My point is that the longs on those threads are treated to an endless barrage of posts that match the tactics described in the article. Some of Pluvia's "downgrade" posts are classic examples.

If they engaged in the same tactics for going long, it would be no different.

I'll admit that I post more often when I'm long a stock than when I'm short the stock. My point was not that it's 'bad form' to post when you're short. Not at all. If I'm long a stock and someone posts that they're going short, I take that as good information: I review the chart to see if I should take profits. I did this when Auric said he was shorting WSTL. I looked at the chart and agreed with him (I've posted this on this thread already).

Look at the stocks that are most often targeted by these people. They aren't CSCO or SUNW or NOK or LU. At least, most of Pink's, Pluvia's, Anthony's, and &etc., are small start up companies that would be more susceptible to manipulation. Auric is alone in calling 'real' stocks short (EXDS), and he's a better man for it, but he nevertheless describes all of them as 'POS' that deserve to be driven straight into the ground.

I know nothing about Geist. Regardless of the author's motivation for writing it, the article gave an interesting insight to the motivations behind those who short (or hype) loudly and with no respect for differing opinions.

It's a question of tactics, MB, I wasn't clear in my post. I have nothing against short selling and welcome the constructive discussion of short plays.
