Barringer Technologies Launches New Walk-through Portal; Sentinel
Screens Individuals for Illegal Trace Substances

WARREN, N.J., Sep 18, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Barringer Technologies Inc.
(NASDAQ: BARR) today launched its new non-invasive walk-through chemical
detection portal, the Sentinel. The Sentinel incorporates Barringer's existing
IONSCAN(R) technology with Sandia National Laborites' sample collection and
concentration techniques, which is exclusively licensed to Barringer. The
Company expects initial shipments of the Sentinel to begin this year.

Kenneth Wood, President of Barringer Technologies, said, "We believe the
Sentinel will greatly enhance security at airports, government buildings and
other high security sites. The new non-invasive process detects trace amounts of
explosives, drugs or illegal contraband. The Sentinel can specifically identify
the substance detected, aiding law enforcement and security personnel."

The walk-through portal screens approximately seven people per minute and can
detect trace particles or vapors of a full array of substances in addition to
metal detection. The Sentinel's detection process is similar to walking through
a metal detector. As an individual proceeds through the portal, airflow gently
dislodges particles. The trace particles are collected and analyzed immediately
within six seconds.

"Barringer has set the performance standard for trace explosive and narcotic
detection with the IONSCAN(R) instrument line, currently in use at more than 70
US airports and hundreds of facilities in 58 countries," said Mr. Wood. "We are
excited about the launch of this new product, which will prove to be
instrumental in aiding security systems nationally and around the world."

Sandia National Labs is a multi-program Department of Energy laboratory operated
by Lockheed Martin Corporation. With main facilities in Albuquerque, NM and
Livermore, CA, Sandia has research and development programs contributing to
national security, energy and environmental technologies, and economic
competitiveness.

Headquartered in Warren, New Jersey, Barringer Technologies Inc. is principally
engaged in developing, manufacturing, and marketing of high technology products
for drug and explosive detection and other security and industrial applications.
The Sabre 2000(R) and the IONSCAN(R) are the Company's proprietary trace
particle drug and explosive detection units.
