Operating on a standard battery, it allows 3-1/2 hours' listening time By STEVE DAWSON IN VENICE THE launch of an all-in-one mobile phone-cum-MP3 music player has been announced here by Siemens, the German-based mobile information and communications group. The silver-coloured SL45 comes with a MultiMediaCard which can store up to 32 MB of data. In music terms, that means 35-45 minutes of Fatboy Slim as a novel alternative to taking that call from your insurance agent. ""This is what we now call a mobile device, because it is no longer just a phone,'' said Mr Georges Boulloy, vice-president of global product market of mobile phones. The MP3 function, allowing users to listen to digital music, operates in the 20 Hz-20 kHz range. Listening time on a standard battery runs to about 3-1/2 hours. The functionality of this hybrid device is not as broad as some dedicated MP3 players but shuffle, repeat, next track, last track, play, stop and pause functions are available. A stereo headset with remote control is standard accessory. The MultiMediaCard can also store voice recordings made either while holding a telephone conversation or dictating a voice memo. Up to five hours of such recordings can be made, extending to a maximum of 20 minutes for each one. The display holds seven lines of text (16 characters per line) in this WAP, or Internet-enabled, phone. The unit can exchange data with your PC, which is how it accesses MP3 files. As a dual-band phone, it supports voice dialling, has a standby time of 60-170 hours with one to four hours' talk time. It also has a diary function and six games. The price will be made known when the SL45 becomes available in December. Link straitstimes.asia1.com.sg
