jimj. Wouldn't put HGT in an IRA or other retirement acct.

The tax advantages mentioned in my previous post are best advantaged in a regular taxable brokerage account.

For conservative investors with self directed retirement accounts, I'd use other investments. Basically look at a variety of different vehicles and do careful due diligence on each of them.

One I've not really looked into that might offer some good candidates is convertible securities of good oil & gas companies which offer good current interest or dividends and cap gains potential. Don't want to get into specifics, or other vehicles due to time constraints. And besides, such choices would have to depend heavily upon an individuals risk profile, investment objectives, level of experience, etc.

Being a professional investor for many years and a former broker, I routinely take on risks that wouldn't be appropriate or advisable for most investors. For example, most of my large capital gains are generated in my ROTH IRA.

Because of my background, and living with risk for so many years, am completely at ease with this approach and almost never miss a good nights sleep. But for the average investor? Such an approach might put them in an intensive care unit, lol.

The point is, we are all very different and there's no one formula or style that will work for everyone.

Good luck with whatever choices you make.
