O.T.?? Sony Camera Can Insert Images Into PlayStation2 Games

Wednesday, September 13, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sony Corp. (6758) on Oct. 2 will begin marketing a new digital camera that can insert photographs into images from the company's PlayStation2 game console.

Players will be able to use the new camera to insert photographs onto the faces of characters in PlayStation2 games. A special printer can then be used to print the composite images. The new device is a first step in Sony's plan to network the home game consoles to other devices.

The new camera captures images with a 3.34-megapixel CCD (charge-coupled device) and the equivalent of a 39-117mm 3x optical-zoom lens. It measures 53.9 x 113 x 43.8mm and weighs 208 grams. By connecting the camera to a personal computer, images can be transferred from NTT DoCoMo Inc.'s (9437) i-mode service free of charge.

The price of the camera is 99,800 yen. The company plans to ship 150,000 units a month, including exports.
