Hi Don Green; Rambus management let everyone think that the Hitachi signing meant that the NEC/Hitachi joint venture was also going to pay. After the PR, it came out that Hitachi never acknowledged the validity of the Rambus patents, and it also came out that the royalties only covered SDRAM produced for a six month window.

The problem is that Rambus management let everyone think that the agreement was a big deal by carefully witholding information from the public. Given that history, a lot of people are going to assume that the same thing is going on here. It's a good thing that they have the analyst meeting tomorrow, they can explain exactly what is going on then.

I really don't know how it is that people find enough guts to short (or go long) this stock. Right now, it is quite obvious that DDR is the next memory standard. The next big news comes out Sept 20, I believe, from VIA. As far as the royalty situation goes, it is still unclear, the courts do weird things, but the heavy hitters have not yet signed.
