NEC Debuts Workstation With Intel's 1GHz Processor
Wednesday, September 13, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--NEC Corp. (6701) on Tuesday started selling a new workstation that uses Intel Corp.'s 1GHz Pentium III Zeon processor, the first of its kind in Japan.

The top-of-the-line model is priced at 1.59 million yen. The new computer is targeted primarily at manufacturers' planning and design departments.

Two models are available, both with Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 2000 Professional operating system. NEC's own 3-D image-processing chip is available as an option. For the first three years of purchase, any signs of computer trouble will be reported automatically to round-the-clock customer support personnel.

Hi Don Green; Re the Tessera news. DDR 1.5 is a simple migration of DDR to CSP packages. This is an example of DDR using technology first pioneered by RDRAM in order to catch up with RDRAM.

But does Rambus collect patents on Tessera's technology? No: "Tessera's "turnkey" licensee services address the time-to-market needs of all Tessera licensees - including those who license Toshiba's wire-bonded JBGA technology."

This is an example of the performance enhancements that are still available to DDR. But DDR is already at 266MHz bus, 400MHz point to point without them.
