Tellium in $350 million switch deal
September 12, 2000 04:32 PM PT
by Rex Crum

"A week ago, Oceanport, N.J.-based Tellium began shipping a new version of its optical switch. Today the company announced where a lot of those switches are headed for: London.

That's because Tellium inked a five-year contract to sell its Aurora Optical switches to British telecom giant Cable & Wireless (CWP). The deal is worth a minimum of $350 million and is said to be the largest contract win for a private fiber optic company. "

"The involvement of some of the largest public networking companies has made the optical networking space very attractive for investors of late. Research firm Pioneer Consulting has estimated that the market for optical networking technology will grow from $8 billon this year to $50 billion in 2004."
