GV,

This news report refrences both production problems and soft demand:

Intel, Advanced Micro Cut by Banc of America's Whittington

New York, Sept. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. fell after Banc of America Securities LLC analyst Richard Whittington lowered his rating on the chipmakers to ``market perform'' from ``strong buy.''

Intel fell 2.56 to 62.38 and Advanced Micro dropped 1.81 to 28.69.

Whittington didn't immediately publish a written report. Banc of America spokeswoman Koryn Kelley confirmed the analyst lowered his ratings.

Whittington warned slowing demand for computer chips and production problems could hurt Intel, according to Timothy Ghriskey, a portfolio manager for Dreyfus Corp. Banc of America salespeople communicated Whittington's comments over the phone to Dreyfus traders before markets opened.

RE:"This doesn't make sense to me, because Whittington downgraded AMD also. If it was an INTC execution issue, it would seem to me that he would have kept AMD at a buy."

Actually, this shows some smarts.
If you downgrade Intel, you might as well downgrade AMD because it's going down too. Then if he wants to pick up some AMD he can do it cheaper...
