Syncsort to Support Network Appliance End-to-End Strategy for Data-Intensive Enterprise Applications
Syncsort's Backup Express to support new Network Appliance(TM) storage solutions NetApp® F840c, F840, and Data ONTAP(TM) 6.0http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/000913/ca_network.html
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 2000-- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP - news), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content management solutions, today announced that Syncsort, Inc., the leading developer of high-performance systems and data warehousing software for mainframe, UNIX®, and Windows® environments, will support the newly announced NetApp storage solutions.

Syncsort's Backup Express, a high-performance, enterprise-wide backup and restore software, will support both the F840 filers and Data ONTAP 6.0 in an enterprise data storage and backup environment. The support gives data managers scalable storage capacity, improved data integrity, and increased data availability to scale their operations to any size in a single, unified, easily managed backup, and restore environment.

``This is a natural evolution of our product to support our high-end customers and their data management needs,'' says Vic Werner, director of marketing at Syncsort. ``Our customers' needs are growing rapidly, some as much as 100% every quarter. A system such as the F840 and Data ONTAP 6.0 allows these users to easily and seamlessly expand their storage at their own pace while taking advantage of Network Appliance's 'end-to-end' data management and content delivery strategy.''

Backup Express' latest release, 2.1.3, includes filer-to-server backup, which allows the data on filers to be backed up using NDMP to a tape library attached to a server. This offers a number of advantages. First, for sites with fast, high-bandwidth networks such as Gigabit Ethernet or ATM, the drives in a library can be split between the filer and other servers, leveraging the hardware investment. Second, general-purpose operating systems contain the drivers for a wider array of tape devices offering greater flexibility in backup and restore operations. And third, you can easily change backup strategy configurations from dynamic allocation of tape devices in a storage network to direct connection of tape library to a Network Appliance filer while keeping a centralized catalog. This means you have the flexibility and support necessary for today's business environment.

``Syncsort's ability to offer diverse backup scenarios and support of our latest solutions give enterprises of any size the flexibility to backup their data in ways that fit each company's needs,'' said Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. ``The company's support of our F840 filer and Data ONTAP 6.0 ensures customers that as they scale their storage requirements from tens to thousands of terabytes, they have a flexible, secure backup solution.''
