Atmel reportedly interested in closed Siemens fab in U.K.
Electronic Buyers' News

SAN JOSE -- Atmel Corp. is reportedly negotiating with Siemens AG of Munich to acquire the company's closed DRAM fab in North Tyneside, England. According to press reports in the U.K., Atmel is interested in buying the facility, if it can line up tax incentives from the British government and negotiate an acceptable price.

In San Jose, Atmel officials won't comment on the reports, and corporate attorney Mike Ross said press stories confirming the negotiations were "not accurate."

The North Tyneside facility was originally opened to produce 16-megabit DRAMs for Siemens' semiconductor division, which later became Infineon Technologies AG. Siemens decided to close the fab in 1998 during the worst of the last DRAM slump (see March 1 story), but the plant was not included as part of the Infineon spin-off last year.

Siemens has been trying to find a buyer for the shuttered fab, but a series of possible deals fell through in the past year. The fab's cleanroom infrastructure remains in place, but the 8-inch wafer equipment has been largely sold off or relocated to Infineon fabs.
