<< Greespan mum on economy, interest rates

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2000 1:11:00 PM EST

CHICAGO, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan did not discuss the U.S. economy or the outlook for key interest rates in an address to a National Association for Business Economics conference on Wednesday.

In his brief remarks, which were taped ahead of their release, Greenspan lauded the late economist Herbert Stein, who chaired the President's Council of Economic Advisers from 1972 to 1974. Greenspan succeeded him in that position, heading the CEA until 1977.

"Herbert Stein was brilliant. Of this, there is no question," Greenspan said.

Stein, who died last year, was posthumously awarded NABE's newly-created Herbert Stein Public Service Award. It was accepted by Stein's son Ben Stein, an economist, writer and TV personality.

Stein was one of the architects of President Nixon's economic policies, including his efforts to fight inflation with wage and price controls.>>
