Wrong! The agreement is for 20 quarters no doubt.
NEC will spin off some elements of its memory business to the new joint venture but we do not know which yet. We can only guess. Other business groups will be contained entirely within NEC. THere should be no problem getting licenses for the new joint venture in as much as the terms are already known.

NEC makes microprocessor and microcomputers as well as chips for communications, set top boxes, etc. It is the number 2 semiconductor company in the world. It appears that some of the license pass through to the new joint venture perhaps the RDRAM license.

We do not know the details of these agreements so to speculate that they are meaningless is entirely unwarranted
IMO.
