"I think it would be safe to assume ..." You might want to look a little further. I haven't been on campus since the early 90's but it was a mess then. Since the liberation of campus life (late 60's early 70's) the dorms have turned into wild brothels. A huge percentage of freshmen and fresh women get washed out by this fact alone during the first semester. I have heard professors complaining that they wish somehow the first semester could be gradeless because they loose so many. Nothing is safe to assume without data. I hope things have changed over the last decade.

I used to rent my basement to coeds. The typical scenario of the 80's would be that Connie coed would show up during the summer after her freshman year. Connie was grown up enough now to handle her own apartment. She would have mom and dad and occasionally even a Church rep with her. They would guarantee a studious peace and quite year for their little coed. In the fall the roommate would appear a little on the wild side but tolerable. Connie's boyfriend had a baseball scholarship to attend state college at another location. Yep, peace and quiet...until during Thanksgiving break, Connie finds out that her boyfriend hasn't been 100% faithful down at old state U. By Christmas my basement has become a bed and breakfast for many a lonely boy. By the end of the year Connie is a new woman; and mom, dad, and church deacon were no where to be seen. The girls seemed to have a major change in there academic functioning, whereas I didn't see all of this changing the boys' study habits much.
