hi mike,

if the link cheeky provided doesn't do it, here are some notes i have gathered in a file on the topic...

*********************************

win98 shutdown problems

How to Troubleshoot Windows 98
Second Edition Shutdown
Problems

support.microsoft.com

also…. Here's a work-around.

Create a new shortcut on the desktop, Name it "ExitWindows". Right click the icon, click on properties, and in the box named "Target" type the following line.

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

In the box "Start In", type C:\WINDOWS, then save it.

To exit, just double click the icon."

Also...

Are you on a cable modem, network hub, or have a secondary Operating system? More likely your kernell32 file is corrupt. when was the last time you ran scanreg.exe if not sure, type scanreg in the RUN window of the 'start'.

good luck. let us know if it gets better
