I saw that story. If you study ancient history (my passion), you see how much of the lore is built on actual history. I remember once Wally Schirra was on a flight with us, returning from Istanbul where he went to look for the Ark.
People forget their archeology: look at the excavation of Troy; look at the Dead Sea (forget NESS).
