Motherboard Sector Performance to Fall Below Par in Sept.

September 11, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan's motherboard sector, after experiencing a
lukewarm performance in July and August, is expected by many experts to mark time or
even take a downturn in September.

A similar view is held by Intel Corp., the leading upstream device company.

Usually, the motherboard sector embarks on an upward curve beginning in August and
shipments peak by the end of September or October. However, in the light of observations
given by Giga-Byte Technology Co., Ltd., Shuttle Inc. and the upstream component
distribution network, motherboard shipments this year are unlikely to maintain the same
trend as in August.

Commenting on why the motherboard sector is likely to disappoint general expectations in
September, some manufacturers said they believe the DDR product release was one
reason responsible for speculative attitudes in the market. Moreover, shortages of Intel's
Celeron microprocessors also were important factors affecting purchases of the 810
motherboard model.

The most widely cited reason for the sector's sluggish performance is that the distribution
network has overbooked products in the third quarter because of unrealistically optimistic
market expectations. Thus, the network is selling its inventory, leading to lower amounts
of buying.

As the fourth quarter is the transition period to new products, and the U.S. and European
markets remain sluggish, Asustek Computer Inc., a leading company in the sector,
estimated that it would ship around 4 million units of motherboard products in the fourth
quarter.

Although OEM clients continued to increase their orders from Giga-Byte, the company
expects motherboard shipments in the fourth quarter to remain much the same as in the
third quarter, as no benchmark products have yet come out in the assembly market...http://www.nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com/wcs/leaf?CID=onair/asabt/news/111606
