Euro Recovers After ECB Says It Plans to Purchase the Currency
By Tom Kohn

London, Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- The euro rose against the dollar and the yen, reversing an early loss, after the European Central Bank said it will buy 2.5 billion euros with the interest it earns on foreign-currency reserves.

The euro rose as high as 87.17 U.S. cents, from 85.64 cents in early trading and 86.44 yesterday. The single currency jumped to 93.48 yen, from 91.70 yesterday. The yen was little changed against the dollar at 107.02.

The ECB's announcement marks the first time the central bank would buy the currency, which has fallen 26 percent against the dollar since its inception Jan. 1, 1999, for its own account. The central bank bought euros for yen at the behest of the Bank of Japan in June 1999.
