Actually, imposing silence in the name of religion, with government fiat goes much farther than the lighting of a national Christmas tree, or having a Senate chaplain, because it represents *compulsion*, and compulsion in the name of enforcing religious sensibilities. There are gray regions, but forcing kids to bend to the religious doctrine of the majority with the force of government behind it is well beyond the line. You do not ban the observance, what is banned the official government enforcement of the observance. Kids should be free to pray as they wish. Governments at any level should not be telling them how.
