IMT-2000 application to be postponed by one
month

Unable to work out a compromise among the wireless carriers and equipment
makers on the technology standard issue, the Ministry of Information and
Communication is ready to postpone the deadline for the IMT-2000 license
application by one month.

Speaking with reporters yesterday morning, Suk Ho-ick, director-general of the
telecommunications business bureau, said, "The ministry will ask the three service
operators applying for the licenses and the three equipment makers to come up
with a compromise plan that allows for the adoption of multiple technology
standards." However, none of the service operators have formally advised the
ministry of their position on the standards, he added. The three service operators in
the running for the three available IMT-2000 licenses are the consortiums led by
Korea Telecom, LG Electronics and SK Telecom. The three equipment makers
are Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Hyundai Electronics Industries.

"Should the heads of the concerned companies request postponement of the
application deadline, we will review putting it off by a month," said Suk. Since the
size of the contribution amount, what the service operators will pay for an
IMT-2000 license, has already been set, there will be no problem in meeting the
end-of-the-year deadline for the selection of IMT-2000 operators, he added.

The original schedule for IMT-2000 operator selection calls for application
submission from Sept.25-30.
