In the TDMA system, they use the ANSI-41 map protocol and the CDMA2000 BTS from ERICY can be hooked directly to this to allow the systems to be overlayed and upgraded. In fact, if AT&T wanted to transition slowly, they could allocate 1.25 MHZ for their new CDMa system and the rest for TDMA/EDGE and start by allowing the system to grow on sales merit rather than brick wall changeover.

In the future, when Q gets a WCDMA chipset, then I would expect that they will make a WCDMA/CDMA200 chipset. In fact, I believe that in the long run the two stds will be merged into a single std and everyone will produce one flavor of CDMA blended for the best of both worlds.

As the TDMA wall cracks and people want actual real proven performance, I expect that more and more of the TDMA island will be coverting to one of the flavors of CDMA.
