I flatly reject the notion that presenting to or arguing before the press is a qualification of a U.S. Senator.
That may explain why the Republican Senators have much less influence than their numbers should support. I don't maintain that appearing in public via TV is the most important qualification for office, but I don't see how you can think it doesn't matter. A Senator will not be very effective having good ideas, but unable to get the votes necessary to have the ideas enacted. More people will be swayed by the actual policies of the candidates, but a televised debate is not the forum for presenting a detailed position. The U.S. population is not as stupid as you think they are.
