AIM Analyst Rushin on Virata 2nd-Qtr Profit Forecast: Comment

Houston, Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Jay Rushin, an analyst at AIM Funds Management Inc., talks about Virata Corp.
The maker of chips for high-speed modems said profit in the second quarter ending Oct. 1 will be boosted by greater than expected sales, ending speculation that growth could slow. Companies such as SBC Communications Inc. use Virata's components for digital subscriber line, or DSL, fast Internet service.
''It's been a pretty controversial name over the last four to six weeks, and I think they just want to get out there and tell the world 'we're doing great.' The rumors had surrounded SBC's deployment of DSL and they apparently started a new unregulated subsidiary to take care of the DSL provisioning for SBC. Everyone inferred that would negatively impact Westell, which is one of their top suppliers of DSL modems. A lot of rumors had been swirling that Virata's numbers were at risk.''
''No one else has warned in that sector. I think they just wanted to squelch that, once they felt comfortable. This is one data point saying 'hey, everything is fine,' but this is an important data point. Even if someone did hiccup in the short term, it would not affect overall demand.''
