No, this was by Walter Mossberg who write the "Personal Technology" column every Thursday in the Wall Street Journal. I don't like the guy (like you he's a "post PC era" advocate), but he is influential with his product reviews, lots of eyeballs.

The negatives he listed on the Nomad, 4 rechargeable AA batteries run only 4 hours, and you can't transfer songs from one of your PC's to another, because of "voluntary restrictions imposed by the record industry". He said he shook the "device repeatedly, and even dropped it four or five times onto a wooden desk and onto the floor", and it never skipped and never stopped working. (this is not a very good test, products with moving parts tend to accumulate flaws over time with vibration and impact).
