More detail on the DNA analyzer...

windriver.com

At the heart of this pivotal piece of pacesetting technology are both Wind River’s VxWorks® and pSOSystem® RTOSs – together the most widely used in the industry. The 3700 DNA Analyzer’s software is written on VxWorks to simultaneously control a number of demanding sub-systems in the instrument:

* Standard Ethernet protocol for network communication between the analyzer and the PC host;
* Numerous pumps and valves that move DNA material through the analysis process;
* A four-axis robot arm for sample delivery;
* Variable voltages and currents to separate the DNA helix; and
* A powerful laser to illuminate the separated base pairs for spectral identification.

pSOSystem sits inside the analyzer, running on an MC68332 microcontroller that controls a sophisticated digital camera programmed to photographically record the detailed sequencing displayed by each DNA sample.
