IP and instruction sets.
As far as I know, there has been no real successful claim to IP rights with respect to op-codes and instruction sets, although there have been certain claims made during the '70s. Now it is possible to copyright the mnemonics of instruction sets, I seem to remember that was done with a couple of microprocessors during the '70s or early '80s. But with the current state of laws regarding IP. it would not surprise me if a company could successfully defend IP rights to op-codes in court.
