Platinum dropped to $588.00/$598.00 from $590.00/$590.50 as Anglo American Platinum Corp (Amplats) said it was hopeful of reaching an agreement with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) before a planned union strike at its operations.

A meeting is scheduled between company officials and the NUM at 1130 GMT.

The NUM, which represents 20,000 workers at the world's largest platinum producer, is demanding a 10 percent pay increase and improved working conditions.

The morning fix was at $594.00 from the previous $586.00.
