Gore focused the past week on a host of education initiatives, including proposals to upgrade crumbling public schools, add thousands of new teachers and reduce class size. Speaking on Friday before about 2,000 people, Gore highlighted his plan to make most of the cost of going to college tax deductible. Under it, families could deduct up to $10,000 in tuition and fees from their taxes at a 28 percent tax rate, up from the current rate of 20 percent. Gore said the scheme would make college more affordable and help push attendance rates to new highs. He also would cut the cost of student loans and offer more grants to low-income students. ``It's not good enough to put it all on student loans,'' Gore told the crowd. ``A lot of young people are now graduating from college with the equivalent of a home loan mortgage without the home.'' ``And that's before even adding up the credit cards. Once you add them on you've got to go back home. And, let me tell you, your parents are not as excited about that as you might be,'' he added.
