Steve,

In addition, u can't expect the competing DRAM companies to make progress by committee as fast as a single focused company like RMBS.

I'm in 100% agreement with that, as I've said before. I don't have a lot of faith in consortiums -- give me a single company with a vision and their feet in the fire any time. Especially when they execute well. Regardless of what you believe about RDRAM (the technology), Rambus has done a terrific job of getting the infrastructure in place, starting, of course, with getting Intel to standardize on The Technology. It's not 100% (whatever is?), but you can get testers, RIMMs, RDRAM chips, mobos, ASICs, etc., etc., etc. all from multiple vendors. Chipsets may be the only missing piece.

On top of that, they've set up all the appropriate qualification processes to make certain that the parts work together. As the PC100 debacle showed, this is not necessarily a strength of The DRAM Industry. And now we have the first hint from an "unnamed" source within Micron that DDR may face the same problems. To be honest, I'd be very surprised if they don't.
