You'll have to patch the potato somehow. The beauty of using a room temp potato is that it upsets to fill the bore and make a good gas seal. You'll need to provide some sort of wad behind the potato in order to get a well-sealed bore.
In which case, there is nothing to prevent recommending a river rock, or perhaps a flechette load of half-a-dozen railroad spikes.

Man! Its hotter than a houndog's whore up here. Can't those Middle Earth people keep their heat contained in someplace like Texas or the mid-West? Anything above 75 and I start to feel faint, and we've been knocking down 3 digit temps like this was a death valley summer. I feel like the wicked worlock of west, I'm starting to melt. Thank god for computer rooms.
