(6758) and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (9432) will provide movies, games and other content to home users via NTT's fiber-optic network and Sony's PlayStation 2 home game console, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Friday. The combination of the PlayStation 2 and the fiber-optic network will enable the rapid downloading of video. The two partners plan to start the service on a free trial basis in a limited area in December, with a full commercial rollout scheduled for 2001. With rapid growth forecast for video-on-demand, the two partners are trying to take the initiative to get a jump on the competition, including cable service providers. The partners plan to keep down the cost of the fiber-optic network by having a single connection serve dozens of households. While this will slow data transmission somewhat, the system will still be many times faster than ISDN service. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications is providing a 400 million yen grant to help fund the trial service. NTT West Corp. will supply the fiber-optic network and servers, while Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will distribute PlayStation 2 terminals to participating households. Sony has shipped at least 3 million units of its PlayStation 2 since it hit the market in March, and predicts total shipments will top 10 million units by March 2001. NTT has set up fiber-optic communications networks in major cities, but the high rates and lack of services and necessary infrastructure have discouraged noncommercial users.
