Flapjack, I could eat up a server or two answering that question fully. So I'll give you a simplified version.

It depends on the organization, but in a general the quality manager assists in the formulation of quality policies and procedures. Implements those procedures, develops inspection and auditing methods. Directs the analysis of process problems and failures. And develops methods to improve operational efficiency. However, what I spend most of my time doing is facilitating process improvement teams, coaching senior leadership and training trainers.

I suppose you could say there is a "quality business". It's very broad in scope, but perhaps your organization has sent you to Covey training, Kaisen workshops, Lean manufacturing, or maybe a Theory of Constraints seminar recently? Along with ISO, they seem to be the most popular ones these days.

It figures that a union slug who fights to the bone for his pension knows nothing about quality. Total quality management has been around since Demming(sp?) went to ressurrect Japan's economy after WWII and enabled them to kick the shit out of our crappy union labor products here at home. If you and the other "working(snicker) stiffs" would quit bitching and exert maximum effort for your business, you probably wouldn't have to fight so hard for raises and benefits. How many other of your compatriots sit and type on chatboards all day during "working hours?" I know acting upon principle is foriegn to you and the other liberal morons on this thread. That is why you are incapable of understanding how badly the Democrats treat people who haven't climbed the economic ladder yet. As far as my situation, I don't give a care whether you believe me. You stated earlier that you read the newspapers. I would find it hard to believe that you wouldn't understand why officers and NCO's are leaving the military in droves except that I have personally witnessed the ignorance you profess in your posts. You lack the ability to reason and understand facts. You live in a fantasy world.knc
