This means that a number of stock and options are currently trading in cents rather than fractions. For example, a stock that formerly traded at $32 1/2 now trades at $32.50. The industry will slowly phase in decimalization, to ensure an orderly transition from fractions to decimals. The second phase is planned to begin on September 25, 2000 with over 100 additional listed securities, including selected options trading in one-cent increments. The second phase includes some of the most actively traded securities, such as America Online (AOL) and Compaq Inc. (CPQ). The underlying options for selected securities in the second phase will also trade in decimal format. For options, premiums for the pilot securities equal to or greater than $3 will be priced in ten-cent increments; premiums less than $3 will priced in five-cent increments. For a complete list of the pilot securities fo! r the second phase, visit the "Decimalization Update" section of our web site, under the "Common Questions" area. You do not need to do anything to prepare for decimalization. Securities participating in the pilot program will be quoted, traded, and displayed on your trade confirmations and statements in decimal format (one-cent increments). Please note, open orders for fractional securities changing to the decimal format will be converted on September 23, between 1 am - 8 am, ET (6 am - 1 pm GMT). During this maintenance period, you will not be able to place a trade or view your order status online. This will affect open orders for pilot securities left on the order book after the September 22 market close or new orders for these securities received in fractional increments between 4 pm, ET (9 pm GMT), September 22 and 1 am, ET (6 am GMT), September 23. All orders for the pilot securities placed after 8 am, ET (1 pm GMT) on September 23 must be entered in decimal format. Upon review of the second phase, the SEC will decide by the end of November 2000 when to extend decimal pricing for all NYSE-listed stocks. The SEC has ordered that trading should be fully decimalized by April 2001.
