Vodafone is exhibiting on stand G77 (Electronics Marquee) in conjunction with ICS Electronics. ICS is a leading world manufacturer of ship and coast radio systems and has been instrumental in adapting Globalstar's offering to the unique needs of maritime users. Vodafone is the only UK mobile operator to offer the Globalstar service. Launched in May, the service provides communications to fleet owners, fishermen and individual maritime users whose lifestyle takes them to remote parts of the world, beyond the reach of conventional terrestrial networks. It uses a dual mode handset, which operates on the digital GSM900 frequency and switches to Globalstar satellite mode when required. For marine users, the SAT550X Marine Terminal, developed by Globalstar, ICS Electronics and Telit, includes the Telit SAT550 satellite phone in a compact and easy-to-use system. It is suitable for use by ships, fishing vessels and pleasure craft operating within coverage of the Globalstar satellite system which extends hundreds of miles out to sea, covering the entire Mediterranean and the North Atlantic shipping lanes, as well as coastal waters around six continents. Globalstar can be used for both 'ship-to-shore' and 'ship-to-ship' communications. A unique feature of the Globalstar service is the ability for customers to retain their existing Vodafone number. The same benefits of GSM - voice calls, text messaging (SMS), voicemail and roaming - are also available through Globalstar, with additional services such as fax, data transmission and positioning services scheduled for rollout. "Satellite communications give marine users the reassurance of being able to stay in touch wherever they are," comments Paul Donovan, Managing Director (Commercial), Vodafone UK. "Not only is Globalstar vital from a safety point of view, it also provides cost effective and secure communications to marine companies, owners of commercial fishing fleets and the serious mariner requiring reliable communications whilst at sea. We anticipate a great deal of interest in the service at this year's Boat Show."
