Re: For a .25u line to be "restarted" it must be shut down first

Ok, not restarted, restarted as an X86 CPU line.

The Katmais went away and had to be brought back.

I have no idea whether or not the lines were shut down, or diverted from other production. The time frame is right for them to have been switched to chipsets, then back to CPUs. Perhaps Intel planned for 95% yeilds and got 80% yields, or they planned for 60% yields and got 45% yields.

They can't have planned for demand drop in the middle of an economic expansion - even I don't think Intel's management is that messed up.

FAB 18 was supposed to be a flash FAB, it had to be switched to CPUs, and there has still been a capacity shortage from Intel in the time frame that this "extra" CPU FAB has started operating.

Intel's Fab 18 in Kiryat Gat, Israel, should come on line in 1998 yielding a four-fold increase in Intel's flash production capacity. Intel refuses to say what its capacity is or will be. Both fabs are expected to support 8-in. wafers and 0.25 micron geometries.
