Dan,

It was Intel's desire to have the MTH, not Rambus's, and Intel's responsibility. Intel certainly had engineers who knew RDRAM signaling well enough to design the 840 and 820; you would think they'd be able to interface it to SDRAM if they wanted to bad enough.
