There is a tension between the two directions -- thicker (the trend until recently) vs. thinner (only recently made possible by the explosion of bandwidth). But you know what they say -- you can never be too rich or too thin!

I tend to think the transition towards thin will happen in "Internet Time" once it hits a certain critical mass, driven by ease of administration, the accompanying low TCO, portability, usability, and increasing comfort/familiarity with the concept that not everything one relies on has to physically reside on one's desktop. In a nutshell, the rise of "WebTone."

But that's JMHO, and I've been wrong before.
