BAE SYSTEMS' CabinCall revolutionises aircraft passenger communications

BAE SYSTEMS has launched CabinCall, a revolutionary passenger telecommunications system that empowers passengers to use their personal cellular telephones safely - yet under crew control - in commercial airliners anywhere in the world, regardless of the location or altitude of their aircraft.

This low-weight system makes available to passengers the many advantages of the in-flight use of personal phones to make business or personal calls. In doing so, it lowers the demands on cabin staff compared with current products, and provides an additional revenue stream for airline operators and service providers.

The system uses existing aircraft communications bearers - where fitted - in current generation aircraft and simplifies installation of such increasingly demanded capabilities in new build platforms. CabinCall manages links to the ground via satellite or terrestrial networks, supplying intercontinental communications services world-wide for all embarked phone owners.

CabinCall fully resolves all the safety and operational issues of the use of cellular telephones in aircraft cabins through the application of a number of innovative, patent-pending techniques. It manages the volume and frequency of use of RF frequencies within the cabin, and can inhibit all calls during critical flight phases, such as embarkation, taxiing, take-off and landing.

Replacing current wired-in seat phones, which require substantial cabin crew support to operate, it represents the greatest advance in airline customer communications services for more than 20 years. Passengers are likely to view its availability as a significant service discriminator when selecting flights.

CabinCall will enter revenue generating service in the Autumn of 2001, following in-flight demonstrations later this year and contract signatures by launch customers, with a number of whom the company is in advanced states of negotiation. A variety of service capability growth options, including internet browsing, are included in the product development plan.

A key partner in the development is interWAVE Communications International Inc of San Jose, California.

Further variants will be released for ARINC 752 Terrestrial Flight Telecommunications System (TFTS) and North American Telephone System (NATS) applications, along with interfaces for the ARINC 746 CTU.
