Right. I assumed that ship-to-ship over a LONG distance (not the usual "ship-to-ship" call IMO) would be via ship-sat-GW-PSTN-GW-sat-ship. I guessed that traditional ship-to-ship within the coverage a given gateway could be handled in the manner I described. Sort of like running a jumper from the gateway's outbox to its inbox and pretending it's the PSTN.

I don't know, though, whether a call can be made ship-sat-ship without the use of a GW, as you may be intending to suggest in the latter part of your post. AFTER REREAD: No, that's not what you are suggesting.
