Great post (if utterly off topic, but hey, it's Saturday).

When they drained the sodium from EBR-II at INEL I think the only hope for the next 25 years was drained away with it.

Pete,

I've been watching the R&D efforts for fusion power since I was in high school in Los Alamos in the 70's. People took this very seriously back then. It is too bad that momentum for alternative energy research was killed in the 80's.

BTW: The most energy ever generated in modern Los Alamos was during the Cerro Grande fire in May. This of course pales by comparison to the eruption of the Jemez caldera a million years ago, which spread volcanic ash as far away as Nebraska.

Pete - space-based solar was always one of my favorites but only because the thought of a hundred-megawatt microwave beam from space. Say that puppy gets hit by a meteor and that beam sweeps through Detroit or Chicago - can you say crispy critters??
