Well some of the taxes we pay on gas goes for benefits (highways) though those could be built more efficiently by private companies (and some even are!!!)
But much of the taxes all over the world, including the U.S. and England, that is put on gas for cars goes for much different programs than those that aid drivers...and most of them I personally strongly disapprove. It's just redistribution of money again and I'd prefer to spend mine in my fashion, not the governments.
