Investing in an equity or index involves a determination of value moving forward. If "past performance does not determine future results," then solely using past valuation measures could represent an outdated measure of valuation. Yes, those who ignore history are doomed to repeat its errors. But those who live solely in the past are doomed to miss out on the newest innovations. I think it pays to stand in between the old and the new, the wisdom of the past and the newest innovations that shape the future of humanity, having a leg in each realm.
