Alex did a great job explaining the importance of EDFAs. I would add that whenever you eliminate ODO conversions and move to EDFAs, the costs go down in some areas and increase in others. The dollars that would have been spent on add/drop multiplexers and single-fiber amplifiers are now spent on higher-cost EDFAs and Raman pumps. A rough analogy would be chain food-markets versus mom-and-pop corner stores. The costs of building and supplying a more centrally-located Safeway were high but the efficiencies were huge. Which would have been a better investment is a no-brainer. Pat
